Summer School Begins June 23, 2025 - The Premier Online Entertainment Law Class
David Wienir is an Associate General Counsel at HarperCollins Publishers and Head of Business and Legal Affairs at HarperCollins Productions. Previously, he spent over a decade as a business affairs executive at United Talent Agency (UTA) and practiced at top entertainment law firms Grubman Indursky and Gang Tyre, representing A-list clients including Steven Spielberg and Madonna. He began his legal career as a litigator and First Amendment lawyer at the esteemed international law firm Coudert Brothers, representing The Perseus Books Group and Grove Atlantic.
David’s contributions to the legal field have earned him numerous accolades, including the Outstanding Volunteer Award from Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, recognition as a Super Lawyers "Rising Star" (2009 & 2010), and a place on Variety’s 2014 Legal Impact Report. He is also an accomplished author, with works including Amsterdam Exposed: An American’s Journey Into The Red Light District and Making It on Broadway: Actors’ Tales of Climbing to the Top (foreword by Jason Alexander). His first book, Last Time: Labour’s Lessons from the Sixties, was co-authored at age 23 with a Member of British Parliament.
A dedicated educator, David has taught entertainment law for over 20 years at institutions such as UCLAx, NYU and The New York Institute of Technology, and was educated at Columbia, Oxford, LSE and Berkeley Law. He is licensed to practice law in New York and California.
Before his career as an entertainment lawyer, David hosted the talk radio show Estonia Today on Estonia National Radio, worked in the California Governor’s legal affairs office, and assisted the LA District Attorney during the Menendez murder trial. His diverse career also includes working as a speechwriter for a British MP, a researcher for The Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation, and a statistician for CBS Sports. He is also an ARTA-trained whitewater rafting guide, leading river expeditions in California and Oregon, and founded and served as the first musical director of The Oxford Alternotives, Oxford’s oldest a cappella group.
